Enjoy Life Crunchy Flax with Chia

Front view of the box. No banana for scale, sorry.

Here we go with another cereal review! You would think it would be easy to find vegan breakfast cereals, but it is actually quite challenging. Most of the major cereal manufacturers love fortifying with vitamin D3, which most likely isn't vegan. And then there's all the other crap that gets added from milk powder to gelatin to the mountains of sugar, even in supposed "healthy" cereals!

So how does Enjoy Life's Crunchy Flax stack up? Let's find out!

Cost. For whatever reason, breakfast cereals seem to be a bit pricey. When you start looking at the specialty varieties, this is especially true. This is a tiny box that contains only about four and a half servings, and at most stores I've seen it priced between $4-5 a box. So that comes out to about $1 per serving. At the time of writing this post, you can pick up a whole 12 case at Amazon for only $42, which comes to $3.50 per box. Luckily I found this particular box at Grocery Outlet for only $2.

Packaging. Here we have pretty standard packaging for cereal, a cardboard box with the cereal in a plastic bag within. I was able to open the top of the box without shredding it - yay! But the inner bag did require the aid of scissors.

Nutrition panel

Nutrition. Flax and chia? Go go Omegas 3s! Flax is some pretty awesome healthy stuff, not sure how much you're getting in one serving, but it is the second ingredient so there is hope! Sorghum flour (first ingredient) isn't much of a source of fat, so I'm assuming that the majority of the 3.5 fat grams are from the flax and chia, so it's all good, and there's no saturated fat, extra good. You get a sizable 7 g of protein and 5 g of fiber, so much awesome! There is cane and raisin juice providing some added sugar, but at only 3g per serving, that's pretty decent for breakfast cereals.

Only the finest almond milk for these crunch nuggets!

Munch Time. First impressions of this cereal were the smell, I'm guessing it's the sorghum flour which I'm not familiar with - it's not a bad smell at all, but is distinctive. And then there's the appearance, sure there's a pic of it right on the box, but the shape seemed a bit different, less pellet like and more like.... uhhhh.... mcdonald's chicken nuggets? It kinda reminds me of kitten chow for some reason.

With a cereal this healthy, it's reasonable to think that it might not taste very good. Thankfully that assumption would be wrong! I actually rather liked this Crunchy Flax. The taste kinda reminded me of Cheerios, not really sweet, just a pleasant grain flavor. And as its name would suggest, it stayed plenty crunchy, even in almond milk!

Close up for texture, with and without the almond blood.

BONUS ROUND. First of all, Enjoy Life does a pretty awesome job at listing all the bonuses of their products, and you can see what all they have to say about this cereal on their own site. The website shows it's certified vegan, though the box lacks this, it does at least mention vegan on the nutrition panel.

For the Celiacs out there, it is certified gluten free. It's also free of a boat load of allergens, including soy, tree nuts and peanuts. It's also non GMO certified.

Overall, I probably would eat this cereal on a regular basis if it wasn't for the price.
